The Sierra isn’t just a car. For the ’90s kids, it’s an emotion you grew up seeing in ads and on the road. Tata has gone bold with this one especially that wraparound-glass vibe making a return. Let me say it straight the Land Rover Defender has an aura of its own. The first time I test-drove one at the Gurgaon dealership, the salesman said Sir this car doesn’t like roads it prefers wilderness. It sounded filmi, but after driving it, I didn’t feel like he was lying.
Defender feels overbuilt in a surprisingly satisfying way. The way the doors shut, the suspension flexes the whole thing screams tough luxury. But yeah, the maintenance punches your wallet hard. One client had his Defender stuck in service for 9 days because of a gearbox sensor. When he called me man, you could hear the anger shaking in his voice.

The Sierra's platform is modern, the features are stacked, the interior feels clean but it’s tuned for urban life. The Defender is born rugged. There's a natural confidence in the way it tackles terrain.
Sierra’s electric or hybrid setup is smooth, no doubt. But the Defender’s petrol/diesel growl still delivers a different kind of thrill. Once I took a Defender on a small trail around the Aravalli side. For a second, I thought it might get stuck but it simply walked over the rocks like they weren’t even there.
Is Sierra just style or substance too?
One personal moment a few months ago I attended a pre-launch preview at a Tata dealership. A senior engineer standing next to me said Sir this time the company has asked us to keep panel gaps extra tight. But his face didn’t carry that absolute confidence you see in fully-tested products. That little doubt stayed with me.
Still, sitting inside the Sierra gives you this airy, refreshing feel. Interior quality is definitely way improved compared to old Tata SUVs. Long-term consistency though we still have to watch.
Defender isn’t flawless either
As far as I’m concerned, the Defender isn’t perfect either. Electronics sometimes act moody. Air suspension occasionally throws a tantrum while lifting or lowering. And bro the size. Parking valets in metro cities practically curse when they see it coming.
Which one suits what kind of person?
If your budget is under 40–50 lakh and you want something stylish, bold, nostalgic, modern Sierra makes a lot of sense. Features are solid too. But if you want a machine with lineage, reputation, and personality that goes beyond price the Defender satisfies you at a deeper level. Maintenance hurts, but the road presence gives you double the joy.
My personal verdict (a mix of bias and heartbreak)
Sierra is a strong comeback. Tata has shown guts. But the Defender is still that one car that makes you say If only I had a little more budget If I had to choose one and money didn’t matter I’d pick the Defender. But in a real-world scenario with running cost and long-term ownership, Sierra feels like the sensible choice. Now the real question is how much has Tata improved in software and long-term quality this time? Because design alone never wins Indian roads test your patience in ways no brochure ever mentions.
