Tata Altroz CNG Real-world Mileage Tested City vs Highway Performance
Tata Altroz CNG promises 26.2 km/kg, but how does it perform in actual city and highway driving? We put it to the test.
So, Tata Motors launched the Altroz CNG back in 2023. This facelifted version? Same specs as before. Claimed mileage was 26.2 km/kg. But, you know me numbers on paper and real life rarely match.
Engine and Transmission
The Altroz CNG runs on a 1.2-litre obviously aspirated petrol engine, paired handiest with a 5-speed manual. CNG mode drops energy to seventy two bhp and 103 Nm torque. City driving? Relaxed. Highway? Smooth and stable. I remember one day when I pushed it a bit on the expressway the engine felt calm, no drama. Loved it.
City Mileage
City test first. Stop-and-go traffic, AC on, full boot load. Result? 19.8 km/kg. Yeah, less than the claimed 26.2 km/kg. Expected? Kind of. Realistic? Definitely. Funny thing I once drove it gently for a week just to see if mileage improves. Slightly better, but nothing crazy. City driving really has a completely different feel, you know.
Highway Mileage
Weekend trip to Lonavala. Highway speed, 80–90 km/h, steady RPM. Mileage? 34.58 km/kg. Surprise, right? This is the real benefit long drives, low fuel cost. And yeah, the manual gearbox helps you control it better. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cursed automatic cars on inclines not fun.
Overall Efficiency
Combined figure comes to 27.19 km/kg. Higher than claimed, I know. But trust me, real life is a mix some days city mileage low, some days highway magic. And that’s exactly why I love testing these cars personally.

Insider Take
Bottom line? If you want a fuel-efficient metropolis hatchback with occasional dual carriageway consolation, the Altroz CNG is stable. Just maintain your expectations practical Claimed numbers are fine for ads. But daily driving? It’s all about your style, traffic, load, and how gentle you are on the throttle. Manual transmission? Big yes gives you control, and honestly, driving feels more fun.
Is Tata Altroz CNG Real-world Mileage Tested City vs Highway Performance the right direction?
