The Scout brand was supposed to make a grand comeback. Big plans, huge excitement. But now a twist. According to Germany’s Der Spiegel, the relaunch may be delayed till mid-2028. Technical Challenges Behind the Scout Delay

Scout’s Terra pickup and Traveler SUV will come as EV and EREV versions. At first, EVs were supposed to lead. But more than 80% of pre-orders want the range-extended version. So, Scout shifted focus. Makes sense.

Design and Weight Distribution Complications

Now, let’s talk design. Terra and Traveler were EV-only. No engine at the back. Later adding a gasoline engine? Tricky. Scout engineers got creative. They placed the four-cylinder engine sideways under the rear cargo area. Not just engine. They had to fit cooling, exhaust, and fuel tank too. Phew.

Result? Weight distribution changed. Towing capacity halved. Scott Keogh, Scout CEO, confirmed on Jay Leno’s Garage. Terra EV can tow 10,000 pounds. EREV? Just 5,000 pounds. Payload takes a hit too. Not great for truck fans who like heavy-duty hauling. And yes, the whole point of EREV refuel quickly far from chargers is affected slightly.

Financial and Competitive Pressures

Relaunching a brand, building a new factory, opening a HQ. Expensive. Really expensive. Volkswagen Auto Group isn’t exactly rolling in cash right now. 2025 was rough. Tariffs hit Audi and Porsche in the U.S. Hard.

Scout’s factory? 250,000 annual capacity. Way bigger than needed. Other VW brands feeling the pinch. And competitors? They’re catching up fast. Ram REV is almost ready. Ford EREV F-150 Lightning is coming. Scout’s delay gives them breathing space.
