So, Mahindra has brought something new again the Thar Roxx Star Edition, now launched in India at 16.85 lakh. Let me be straight, the Thar was already a cult classic. But this Star Edition? A bit of glitz and glam, but the real question is is it truly for off-road fans or just a showroom style statement?

Exterior and Design

Man, the front grille and LED headlights combo looks aggressive. I remember my first Thar test drive on mud tracks full adventure feel. The Star Edition’s cosmetic upgrades shine a lot, but the real ruggedness of the Thar, which you feel in mud and water, is still the same. The rear bumper and alloy wheels feel a bit over-polished probably to attract urban buyers.

Interior Vibes

The cabin feels somewhat premium leather seats, touchscreen infotainment, climate control  all there. But honestly, for a true Thar lover, it may feel a bit overdone. At a dealership, one customer felt the seat and said It’s good, but missing the real off-road vibe. I felt the same. The software and infotainment are smooth, but sometimes there’s a lag or freeze I noticed this myself during a test drive.

Performance and Driving Experience

The Thar comes with 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engines. Mahindra claims the power is enough, but I remember the earlier diesel Thar had slightly hesitant throttle and the same mild feel is still there. Off-road, it’s a beast, but on the highway, you feel quite a bit of body roll. The manual transmission is fun, while the automatic doesn’t feel as smooth in city traffic. And yes, the ground clearance and 4x4 system are best experienced on mud and rocky trails.

Pricing and Value

The 16.85 lakh price tag feels a bit steep, especially when competitors’ SUVs are feature-rich and modern. But if you want Thar’s off-road aura and brand appeal, the price can be justified. A small thing I remember last year a dealer told me limited edition models sell out quickly, and people are willing to pay extra. Straight up, the hype is real, but practical buyers will need to think twice.

Final Verdict

As far as I’m concerned, the Mahindra Thar Roxx Star Edition tries to offer a combo of style and ruggedness for both urban streets and weekend off-roading. But the real Thar magic mud, rocks, and true off-road adventure can’t be completely hidden behind urban polish. If you crave weekend adventure with a bit of style, this edition is interesting. But if real off-roading is your priority, I’d say, take a test drive and feel it don’t just go by photos and specs.

Personal tip Take a long test drive with the dealer and try it on muddy tracks. I did this myself once near the outskirts of Gurgaon that’s where the real fun showed up, and I had to overlook a few software glitches.
