As far as I’m concerned, EV hype in India has really blown up. Everyone’s saying Electric cars are the future. Yeah, that’s true. But let’s be real, it’s not just about range and tech specs. Over the past 10 years, I’ve tested petrol, diesel, hybrid, and EVs everything. Some experiences made me go This is the real world, guys.

Tata Harrier EV High Expectations, But Some Reality Checks

When I first saw the Tata Harrier EV, I thought, finally, India’s EV SUV has reached mainstream level. Look, writing 600+ km range on paper is easy. But remember, the old Tata EV model said the same thing, and in the real world, it barely went past 380 km. Same story here. On the highway at 110–120 km/h, the range drops. And with full AC, heater on, wipers running in the rain it feels like the advertised range isn’t quite real-world classy.

Oh, and the software still has glitches sometimes I remember a trip from Mumbai to Pune when the screen froze out of nowhere. Straight up restart fixed it, but it shook confidence a bit. Material quality and build are good. Road presence is solid. But if range really delivers in tough Indian traffic, then yes, this could be a game changer.

Kia Carens EV Family Favorite, But Questions Remain

The Carens EV feels different. MPV vibe, seating comfort, space for the family all great. But when I tried a long drive with AC on, I felt Yes, comfort is there, but the range feels a bit tight. Specs on paper promise good numbers, but the real-world experience isn’t as smooth as the brochure suggests.

I remember a small scene on a Goa trip. We plugged in at a charging station, and the dealer honestly said Buddy, highway numbers will drop. When it turned out to be true, it felt a bit weird. But yes, cabin comfort and ride quality people will love it. Kids’ screens infotainment all good. Just a slight range anxiety compared to a hatchback EV.

Mahindra XEV 9S Bold Attempt, But Execution Lags

Everyone calls the Mahindra XEV 9S fancy. A 7-seater EV SUV, so expectations are high. But let’s be honest, it doesn’t feel fully premium. Interior is a bit simple. Handling is okay, but compared to Tata or Kia, the feel is a little lacking.

The range also gives mixed feelings. Whether highway or city, the numbers look good on paper. Reality is more human. I personally noticed a weird behavior after a software update regenerative braking suddenly became too aggressive during a lane change. First time, it was unsettling. After tweaking settings, it was fine, but small glitches like that shake confidence.

Real-World Driving Straight Talk

People focus on range and numbers. But honestly, traffic conditions, AC usage, terrain, speed variation all these combined lower the real-world range. Tata Harrier EV has good road presence, but real-mile numbers are a bit lower. Kia Carens EV wins on cabin comfort, but range isn’t as elastic as advertised. Mahindra XEV 9S is interesting as a 7-seater EV, but execution misses a bit of the edge.

To be blunt if you drive mostly in the city with occasional highway trips, Carens EV’s comfort will pull you. If you want a solid SUV feel with decent range, take Harrier EV seriously. If a 7-seater concept appeals and your budget is flexible, XEV 9S is an option but not the best of all.

From my perspective, all brands are trying in the EV space. But for the customer, the biggest deal breaker is real range and software reliability. Also, the charging ecosystem is still inconsistent; one place has fast charging, another slow. So before deciding, a mix of test drive and real-world feedback is essential.

This is my personal, slightly rough, and slightly subjective take shaped by years of experience. The best EV for you is the one that fits your daily life and comfort needs, not just the spec sheet.
